GOO GOO DOLLS

According to Robby Takac of the Buffalo-based rock group Goo Goo Dolls, there was no secret formula for Goo Goo Dolls success in the pop music business. “The planets have got to align for you,”he said with a laugh. “All the elements have to be in place. Radio has to pick up, MTV has to decide they’re going to kiss your butt, or you’ve got to kiss theirs. The climate has to be right. Your video has to be right. When everything is all lined up, all of a sudden, Boom, there it is!”

The Goo Goo Dolls band and the album “Goo Goo Dolls”

The Goo Goo Dolls got their start in the Buffalo music scene by releasing their first record, an independent album,”Goo Goo Dolls” in 1987. A nationwide touring schedule helped the Goo Goo’s develop a strong fan base in major markets across the country. Yet,the Goo Goo Dolls are enjoying their newfound success with their album,”A Boy Named Goo”, while pondering the riddle,’ How did their label mates Green Day have multi-platinum sales with their Reprise debut album “Dookie” and Goo Goo Dolls take nearly a decade to achieve strong, yet modest sales?. “It sort of makes me laugh,” Takac said,”people will say to me,’You guys have kind of got that Green Day sound.’ Yes,I’ll agree, except that we’ve been a band for five more years than they have. I don’t think it was necessarily the guys in Green Day wanted to exploit the punk rock music from 1978. I don’t think Green Day started anything musically.

Ninety-eight per-cent of the kids who are buying the Green Day album don’t even known who the Clash is. So Green Day has been accredited with coming up with that style of punk rock music.” Takac, believes that one day the band will no longer be called,’the most promising young band in America’. “We’ve been making records for a long time now,”Takac said. “We’re not about an image thing,or a garage mechanic suit with green hair thing. We deal with our ability to convey what we want to on a record. We’re more about our ability to use our songwriting skills.”
