Jennifer Day Interview

(What’s Jennifer Day [JD] been up to while she’s on the road promoting her new album and single?)

I’ve been working on my songwriting, it keeps me busy. For the most part, you just kind of create your own things to do. You just kind of make your own schedule and just make sure that you’re doing all you can. While I haven’t had all that many band experiences, it’s kind of hard being on the road right now, because things are going at a really fast pace.

(What’s JD doing in the next month or so?)

Basically we’ll be hitting radio and just giving them the new single and getting feedback as to what they think of it. If I have some time, I’ll be doing some more songwriting, but basically I’ll be visiting radio stations and doing these little acoustic events where I play my material for them. I might and try and make a little trip out to LA and meet with some people and try to get focused on some of the opportunities that have come with Coca-Cola and Sunglass Hut and the (Kevin Costner) movie. I have a single on the new Ashley Judd movie also. The song “Completely” will be in an Ashley Judd movie that’s to be released soon. The movie is called “Where The Heart Is”. JD’s song “The Fun Of Your Love” is featured in the Kevin Costner movie,” For The Love Of the Game”. (JD has been pursing a career in writing songs for commercials and soundtracks.) it’s exciting to have your songs in movies and TV commercials. Having the interest is important because having those people come to me and say ,’We want your songs.’, that’s really important to me, because it brings me a great deal of confidence.

(Jennifer Day talks about the way her husband, Brian Phillips, supports her career and how much it means to her.)

I mean my husband and I, we both miss each other so bad…. When we’re away from each other, it’s so funny, I’ll be away from home for a long period of time on a promotional tour or whatever and I’ll call home and tell him ,’Oh, I want to be home so bad…. I miss you so much. ‘ Basically we miss each other the same. Whenever we get together we’re so ready to just hang out and watch a movie together by the fire. (she laughs.) But we know that this (her musical career) is what we both want. Because he’s very behind my career and he knows that’s what I need. This life of music is what I need to live. So he’s very supportive. So whenever I’ve been out on the road away from home for a long period of time I’ll call home at the end of the day and he’ll say,’ Jennifer, it’ll always pay off in the end, because we’ll get to enjoy things that not very many people get to enjoy. We’ll be able to see life and see the world and to experience new things that not many people get to experience. Also the quality time we get to enjoy with each other is just so incredible, because it’s not just the same old routine, so it just makes our time together very special. He’s incredible, he’s just really, really supportive and I’m just incredibly lucky to have him in my life.

(JD talks about the feelings she’s been experiencing since her single has been released.)

The music and the fist single “The Fun Of Your Love” is a little bit pop. So the more alternative (country) stations, the more kind of hip radio stations are into it. So it’s a really cool vibe. But the good thing about my album is that it appeals to not only the good time, pop audience with a cross-over appeal, while it also has songs on it that are country. It can hit with fans anywhere from little kids to elderly people. I think the album has music that appeals to people of all ages. So it’s really cool to see how so many different people like the different songs and styles of music on the album.

(JD talks about the way country music has changed and how her sound has evolved along with the genre.)

Growing up, I was this little cheerleader who listened to Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. So it’s really cool to have all these different kinds of musical influences. While you have to be careful with production and that, if you feel in your heart that what you do is good and right for you and you’re going to make a lot of people happy with your music, then that’s what’s right for you. That’s what is the most important thing anyway. The meat behind the music is what really matters. If you hear a song and it touches your heart, then it doesn’t really matter after all does it? I have this thing, after all, it’s all about music, it’s all about good music. People say,’If you have a choice to go pop, you sound like you could have done it, why didn’t you do it?’ Well, pop is just what’s popular, so it doesn’t really matter if my record is country influenced and it sounds pop. As with anybody, my musical history is a lot deeper then what fits easily in a record company bio. When somebody asked me what my musical influences are, I can only scratch the surface. In reality all kinds of music is my influences.. I was really lucky that, growing up I wasn’t just subjected to old traditional country songs as well as the new, country pop sounds. Because my family is very musically influenced in that they love Motown. Otis Redding, Patsy Cline. And that’s where the influences come for my album.

(So is JD a country recording artist who happens to be marketed as a pop artists or what?)

you know what? That’s not really my concern. Country music today is evolving and it’s doing all these wonderful things. The cool part is, the music is getting good. It just keeps getting better. That’s what really matters.
