Mila Mason
(Q)- Please state your name and place of birth.
Mila Mason- Mila Mason, I was born in Kentucky.
(Q)- You’re a wife, a mother, a songwriter and performer and you also work on the property (ranch) your family owns. How do you maintain a sense of balance in your life while effectively handling so many roles?
Mila Mason- I put God first in my life, my family second and hen my music third. I had to learn that a long time ago, because I was a single mother for several years and I learned it was harder being a single mom and having so many roles to play then it is now. I mean there’s a lot of defeat in this business and in life. So, when I took the time off to make this (new) record “Stained Glass Window”, I even worked another job while I was making this record. The name of the vet (veterinarian) clinic is Volunteer Vet Clinic, it’s in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Dr. Richard (veterinarian) is the name of the individual who worked on my Labrador dog named Zena. They saved my dogs life! They worked on her for four days. And my pets are so important to me.
(Q)- When did this occur?
Mila Mason- This occurred about ten months ago.
(Q)- How did that come about?
Mila Mason- They actually asked me if I would work a part-time job just because I was there with them through what occurred with my dog and I needed a part-time job at the time. They didn’t even know that I was also making a living songwriting (the process of) at the time, and I still needed that actual extra income, so I worked a couple of days a week at the vet clinic.
(Q)- Songwriting is important to you as an individual, isn’t it?
Mila Mason- To keep my music going, I would write songs for free if I ever had to.
(Q)- Why?
Mila Mason- Because there is a big falsehood behind people thinking there is a ton of money songwriting. But, at the same time, if you’re talented and fortunate, then you make a ton of money. If you’re blessed enough to make a living songwriting, then no matter how much you make, it’s an honor.
(Q)-Would becoming a veterinarian be a personal goal of yours in addition to a recording artist and songwriter?
Mila Mason- Yes. But I don’t think I could ever cut an animal open, so I’d prefer to be a veterinarian assistant. I do a lot of work for animal shelters and try to raise money for animals so if I would have chosen another professions it would be a career in the veterinarian profession.
(Q)- How did your own life experiences find their way into any of the song lyrics which comprise your new album, “Stained Glass Window”?
Mila Mason- My mom, (Diane Mason) was an entertainer and she raised five children. (Please Note: Mila Mason’s mother, Diane Mason, had a career as a entertainer and performer. She toured Europe and had a regular show in Las Vegas opening for The Commodores.) So I watched my mom be judged very harshly by some other women, while we growing up. And my mom was a very free spirit and she as non-judgmental. So the song lyrics to the track, “Stained Glass Window”, is a composite, a combination of several women, one of whom is my mother, who I’ve known and who were judged very harshly for what they’d chosen to do career-wise and in regards to their lifestyle. I think all people feel that, when they are being judged by others, they feel like a stained glass window.
(Q)- In what way is that the case?
Mila Mason- If people really knew what was going on inside of other people, and if we had a million lifetimes to spend, then we wouldn’t really judge anybody. The best thing that I think we could do is not to try and judge one another and instead, love one another.
(Q)-Obviously the new music represents an aural snapshot of who you are as an individual in the present tense.
Mila Mason- Yes.
(Q)-What is the songwriting process like for you?
Mila Mason- I usually have my creative side take over when I’m doing house work, because I always hum whenever I’m doing those things. Then, my creative side takes over and I have notebooks and pens stashed around my house or I keep paper right beside me. With three children, I get my inspiration from my children and my day to day activities. I try to write songs every day.
(Q)-What do you believe the listener can relate to on your new album?
Mila Mason- I’m sure that, if the listener can hear the story behind the song,”Maybe, Maybe Not”, they’d strongly relate to the song. I wrote it while I was doing housework. (Please note: Mila’s debut single “Maybe, Maybe Not” was written by Mila Mason and Jim Collins) When I wrote this song, I wrote it while I was also in the process of leaving Atlantic Records (Nashville) and it was a song that I believed was one that could make or break my career. It finally came back to me and my record company believed in the song so strongly that even though it has been cut by another artist, I was very fortunate have that second chance.
(Q)-You’re a very attractive lady.
Mila Mason- Thank you.
(Q)-The ‘permission’ to express sexuality by the ladies in the country music genre has definitely changed in the past five years since you first had your debut album. What is your take on you, expressing your own sense of sexuality via your public image?
Mila Mason- That’s why women buy fashion magazines such as “Cosmopolitan’ and “Vogue”. I love beautiful clothes. I love to express myself with my wardrobe. And, I love to see what other people are wearing. Women love to see what other women are wearing. The fashion industry plays a big part of the country scene these days and to me that’s very cool. I do love where the fashion industry has gone as far as the country genre in concerned over the past couple of years.
(Q)-But onstage what is your ‘costume’?
Mila Mason- (Laughs) I still wear my cowboy boots and I like wearing those onstage. Because there is a comfort level I have in those boots. I feel like I can dance in those boots so I always try to still wear my pants onstage simply because I can wear my boots and then I can slide around in my boots onstage. (Laughs) Those cowboy boots slide around real well onstage and I do move around a bit onstage.
(Q)- What about whenever you’re offstage and at home?
Mila Mason- I ride horses and I do a lot of work in my Wranglers. I still do love wearing cowboy hats (at home) and I have a small collection of cowboy hats and I really wear those cowboy hats for the real reason of blocking out the sun from my face whenever I’m working on my property. (Laughs)
(Q)-Who buys your clothes? Do you power-shop for your wardrobe?
Mila Mason- I rely on my girlfriends to buy me clothes. They all bring me clothes to wear. My husband (Jason Grainger) also buys me clothes, he can probably dress me better then anybody else. (Laughs) He brought me home a shirt last night actually. (Laughs)
