An interview with Canadian recording artist Aaron Lines

“I try write songs that make people think,” singer/songwriter Aaron Lines, says during a recent interview. “Songs with meaningful lyrics.” With the success of his debut USA single,” “You Can’t Hide Beautiful”, off of his debut album titled, “Livin’ Out Loud”, people across North America are certainly thinking about the twenty-four year old Canadian.

With his boy-next-door-good-looks and a debut single, (“You Can’t Hide Beautiful”), being featured on radio and TV stations across North America, Aaron Lines has become the recording artist that he says he originally set out to be. “A little different.” “If you sound unique,” says Lines,” and there is something different about you voice, then that sets you apart from the crowd.”

In the following interview, Aaron Lines speaks openly about his music, romance and love and where he sees his career as a recording artist heading now that his debut album, “Livin’ Out Loud”, has been released.

(Q)- Your name, place of birth and date of birth please.

Aaron Lines- Aaron Lines. Fort McMurray, (Northern) Alberta Canada. November 17, 1977.

(Q)- Being Canadian and an artist who is also recording and performing in the USA, you’ve now well established in all of North America. Having a bit of international flair and flavor to your music, you are broadening the definition of country and pop music.

Aaron Lines- Being Canadian and growing up in Canada, listening to country music on the radio, I think that experience gave me a different spin on what is ‘country’ music. Growing up in Canada, listening to the radio, I wasn’t listening to a lot of the traditional (country music) stuff that people perhaps were listening to down here (In the USA.) So, that I think gave me a little different spin on country music. I mean, back home in Canada, I was listening to Shania Twain (Highly successful international country/pop diva.)

(Q)- Your debut album, “Livin’ Out Loud”, is filled with passionate romantic ballads. You deliver a love ballad quite well. Are you a romantic at heart?

Aaron Lines- You’re on the right track. I’ve always been a sap.

(Q)- What do you mean by that?

Aaron Lines- My favorite songs have always been the love songs. And, when I write songs, it seems like the natural thing for me to write about is love songs. So I think it is one of those things….I guess I was born to be a sap.

(Q)-Can you explain that last comment a bit more in detail please?

Aaron Lines- I’ve always been a little more emotional then some other guys. Like treating the girl who I am with, as though she is someone I cannot live without. And, I guess through my music that is how I deal with that. It is not always easy to say it, but it is easy to sing it. That’s what it comes down to for me, I guess.

(Q)- Are you saying that you can express yourself in some instances more effectively through music and your songs?

Aaron Lines- Yes. To me, I’ve always been a pretty shy guy and I guess songs have been my way of saying what I wanted to say without actually having to say something within a conversation.

(Q)-Has that made communicating those romantic feelings any easier for you?

Aaron Lines- Yes. I’ve even written songs for my girlfriend’s I’ve had when I was growing up. In different parts of my life, for whatever reason, I would get an idea for a song out of the (personal romantic) experience.

(Q)-You grew up in a semi-rural region of Canada. Would your shyness perhaps come from growing up in a close-knit, family-oriented environment?

Aaron Lines- Do you mean more of wanting to sing about it (love and romance) instead of wanting talk about it?

(Q)-Yes.

Aaron Lines- Yeah. Growing up, we didn’t always say how we felt as a family. However, we always knew that we loved each another. But, I think coming from a small town where everybody knows everything, you can’t do anything without everybody else knowing, you tend to be a little bit more guarded at times. (With your expression of emotions.)

(Q)-You also lived and worked in the music business in Vancouver, Canada, Los Angeles and now Nashville. Is there a lesson you’ve learned, a life lesson you’ve learned through your experiences working in the three cities?

Aaron Lines- Two lessons. One, if you treat people well, they will treat you well in return. Two, in terms of the music business, the business has taught me that you have got to make your priorities and then do your work accordingly.

(Q)- What is your attitude regarding the work ethic required to make it in the music business?

Aaron Lines- If you’re not careful, you’ll not enjoy it. Now, if someone for some reason, doesn’t like my music or my record, I won’t take it personally. I try and enjoy the ride while all of this is happening. That’s my motto.’Enjoy the ride.’ I’ve also come to realize that this it is not all going to happen all at once overnight.

(Q)-What about your next (internationally released) single? What will it be?

Aaron Lines- “Love Changes Everything”.

(Q)-Why is that you next single?

Aaron Lines- It’s up-tempo and it’s a song with lyrical meat to it. Like I said earlier, with all of my single releases, I want a song, that will make people think. It’s kind of a sing-a-long song, so it should be a fun song to do live, in concert. It’s one of those songs that stick in your head.
